Malia Kimbrell, the mother of Vivian St. Clair, a third grader who was shot twice during the mass shooting at Annunciation Church, is calling on legislators to enact gun reform, specifically to ban semi-automatic rifles and high-capacity magazines. MAYORS, COUNCIL CALL FOR GUN RESTRICTIONS
On the first day back to school for several districts throughout Minnesota, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey (at right), St. Paul Mayor Melvin Carter, and other Twin Cities mayors joined Moms Demand Action at the Minnesota State Capitol to call for legislative action to ban assault weapons and high-capacity magazines – or, if the legislature cannot agree, to lift state preemption laws so cities can enact their own common-sense reforms.
On Sept. 11, the city council passed a resolution urging state legislators to better regulate firearms in Minnesota. It pointed out that in 2020, gun violence was declared the leading cause of death in children and teenagers and in 2022, public health leaders across the state of Minnesota declared gun violence as a public health crisis and committed to work to prevent the deaths of innocent people of all ages and backgrounds.
It calls for the Minnesota State Legislature to ban assault rifles, high-capacity magazines statewide, require safe storage of firearms, and give cities local authority to enact local gun control legislation.
