Minneapolis Fire Chief Bryan Tyner is proud to highlight a milestone for the MFD: the city’s first all-Native American firefighting crew. Stationed at Fire Station 6 (21 E 15th St), the team — Johnny Crow, Bobby Headbird, Capt. Michael Graves, and Jesse Strong — not only responds to emergencies but also serves as role models for Native youth in the community.
For Crow and his colleagues, growing up in south Minneapolis without seeing Native firefighters made representation important. Now, by showing up on the fire truck and engaging with neighborhoods like Little Earth and Franklin, they hope to inspire young people, build trust, and demonstrate that a career in public service is possible for everyone.
The crew’s presence also strengthens community connections during calls, events, and public outreach, making a meaningful impact beyond firefighting.
