The light rail tunnel back story, meet Nacho, make friends at La Doña

Peter Callaghan wrote a piece for Minn Post that answers a question that many people have asked in the past couple of years – how did the Southwest Light Rail project end up so delayed and so over budget? His conclusion: A lot of it has to do the tunnel under the Kenilworth Corridor.

He goes into detail about how resistance from the city of St. Louis Park and the Twin Cities & Western Railroad Company to relocated their freight rail line led to the decision. Rep. Frank Hornstein is quoted at lengthy criticizing the decision and talking about how it came to pass.

Cool building alert – The Sundial. The building features 12 units coming to 37th and Nicollet. It's a net-zero energy building, all electric (no gas lines), rain gardens and pavers for stormwater management, a rooftop solar system and solar thermal heating, and rainwater harvesting for the toilet water.

Tackling climate change is going to take thousands of small steps, but building more things like these will help us start to get there.

Neal St. Anthony with The Star Tribune wrote a great piece celebrating Jeff "Nacho" Carlson, the community education coordinator at Whittier School. It talks all about the important programs that he runs and all of the kids that he impacts with his dedication and energy.

We want to do more to help bring people's stories like these to life. Do you have any people who make the lives of your kids or other kids better on a regular basis? Send us their names and a quick blurb and we'll try to add them to our story pipeline!
