MPS leadership reiterate little cost savings with school closures

Journalists gathered back at the Davis Center on Sept. 25 to ask questions that the Minneapolis Public Schools community has been asking since senior leadership revealed its school transformation plan on Sept. 15.

Will the school transformation plan save any money? (Up to $2 million.) What is leaderships’ estimate on students leaving the district? (Conservative estimate is 200 students.) How many layoffs would there be? (It depends.)

Superintendent Lisa Sayles Adams, Deputy Superintendent Ty Thompson, and Senior Executive Officer Ryan Strack framed transformation as a resource allocation effort focused on stable, consistent student experiences rather than something to reduce expenses.

KARE 11 livestreamed the press conference. MPS has a webpage about the school transformation plan and the school board is scheduled to vote on the plan on Nov. 10.
