Minneapolis 2026 midterm election results

An election where "I Voted" meant something different

Posted

In the early morning after Election Day, a sprinkling of people stopped by Alex Pretti’s memorial with an intention—to place their “I Voted” sticker somewhere on the memorial. By late morning, the number had grown.

Pretti was shot and killed by federal agents on Jan. 24, 2026 during Operation Metro Surge.

One by one, people continued to place their “I Voted” stickers on the memorial at 26th Street and Nicollet Avenue.

“All day long, it was just a line of people,” memorial caretaker Jeff Wendelberger said about the previous day’s crowd. “They had a mission.”

Across the street at Glam Doll Donuts, the workers stayed busy as people streamed in for “celebration donuts” after Democrats regained a trifecta with the Minnesota Legislature and the State’s first woman governor Amy Klobuchar. Peggy Flanagan’s win makes her the first Native American woman elected to the U.S. Senate.

Southwest Minneapolis had a hyper-local race in its at-large school board race. Results for that race and others follow below.

Record-breaking voter turn out

Based on voter numbers available this morning about 2.8 million people cast a ballot in the 2026 midterm election. The State reports that 4.4 million people are eligible to vote–putting the voter turn out at 64% (this number may change with more data from the Secretary of State)

During the 2022 midterm election, 61% of eligible voters, about 2.5 million people, turned out to vote.

Minnesota did not beat the 2024 voter turn out which was 76%, about 3.3 million people.

The Secretary of State Office uses the governor race to determine voter turnout.
