The Minneapolis City Council met on Jan. 5 to elect its internal leadership and assign council members to various committees.

What follows is the leadership and committee assignments made on Jan. 5

President: Elliott Payne

Vice President: Jamal Osman

Majority leader: Aisha Chughtai (last year’s council vice president)

Minority leader: Robin Wonsley

The majority and minority leaders are new positions for this council. Because the offices of the City Council are non-partisan, the City Attorney said during the meeting that the positions "can't be organized around political parties."

Budget Committee (full council committee): Chughtai (chair), Elizabeth Shaffer (vice-chair), Payne, Wonsley, Michael Rainville, LaTrisha Vetaw,  Pearll Warren, Osman, Shaffer, Soren Stevenson, Jason Chavez, Jamison Whiting, Aurin Chowdhury, Linea Palmisano

Committee of the Whole (full council committee): Chowdhury (chair), Chughtai (vice-chair), Payne, Wonsley, Rainville, Vetaw, Warren, Osman, Shaffer, Stevenson, Chavez, Whiting, Palmisano

Under the Committee of the Whole, there is also a Settlement Agreement and Consent Decree subcommittee that includes all council members with Whiting as chair and Payne as vice-chair, which will meet as determined by the subcommittee chair.

Business Housing and Zoning: Osman (chair), Chowdhury (vice-chair), Shaffer, Chughtai, Rainville, Warren, Chavez

Climate & Infrastructure: Wonsley (chair), Stevenson (vice-chair), Palmisano, Chughtai, Vetaw, Warren, Chowdhury
